With its cartoony, Steampunk visual style and charming robot characters, the SteamWorld titles have become favourites amongst indie game loves. But the developer is really mixing things up with this new title, which switches to the city builder genre.
And boy does it do it well. You take on the role of town planner for a frontier city on a remote planet whose goal is to evolve society enough that you can escape to a new, better planet. There’s classic city construction here, as you gain citizens, put them to work, place buildings and infrastructure, and then level them all up to bigger and better things.
But to do all this you need resources. This is done by mining underground, where you’ll need to find the materials you need, dig tunnels and fight off threats. This idea of managing the town above and the mines below works a treat and the developer has done a great job making it deep, but not overwhelming. Great game!
