The next big 3D adventure game is here and it stars the one and only Smurfs. There are few cuter stars on TV and in cinemas than the little blue tree huggers and it should only take you one quick look at the screenshots to know that their world has been wonderfully recreated in this game. Just exploring the village and the forest, as well as the game’s five worlds, is fun enough for fans of the series.
But there’s a cool story as well, of course.
Naturally, the latest pitfalls to fall on the Smurfs are the result of evil wizard Gargamel. This time he has created a toxic plant – the Vileaf – that he has let loose on the forest. Not only is it corrupting and poisoning other plants, but its seeds lure in Smurfs and then entrap them. How horrible, right?
Papa Smurf is on the case, however. He knows of an antidote, but it requires special ingredients in order to be made. So, it’s up to you to go and find these ingredients, while rescuing trapped Smurfs and poisoned plants. The four heroes that go on this mission are Smurfette, Hefty, Brainy and Chef. So, there’s a good mix of characters to enjoy and master. And the great news is that you can play in co-op, too, which is always our favourite way to play.
The moment-to-moment action is just what you might expect from a 3D platformer. Think Super Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank and Skylanders. That kind of experience. So, you’re not just exploring, collecting and defeating enemies, but also trying to puzzle your way around obstacles. Most of the controls and combat tie into a unique and cool tool called the Smurfizer. You can read more about that in the boxout.
It’s impossible not to love The Smurfs. If you’re a fan of the cartoons or have caught any of the recent movies, you’ll no doubt really enjoy this game. Especially if you have a friend of brother to play it with. It’s a smurfin’ good time!
Introducing the Smurfizer
Your main tool for saving the day in The Smurfs: Mission Leaf has been created by none other than Handy Smurf. It’s called the Smurfizer and it looks like a mix of a vacuum, a gramophone and the Ghostbusters Proton pack. This awesome tool can do a stack of different things and how you not just master its abilities, but find items to upgrade its skills, is key to success.
First and foremost, The Smurfizer can be used to heal plants by spraying antidote on bushes and flowers that have been poisoned by Gargamel’s Vileaf. But you can also use it as a movement tool. It can help you dash forward at speed. You can also use it to glide over long distances. Plus, it’s important in combat. You can use it to dive bomb on threats or obstacles, or use it to suck in objects to then shoot at foes.
