Nintendo Switch (OLED)
The Nintendo Switch really is a brilliant gaming console and home to some of the best games we’ve seen in years. But it’s been out for a few years now, so the company as seen fit to upgrade it. The new version is called Nintendo Switch (OLED). It costs AU$539.95, which is around 15% more than the standard Switch model.
It’s important to note this is not a Nintendo Switch Pro model. It doesn’t feature a leap in internal power to help it better compete with the visuals of the PS5 or XSX. And while it’s ever so slightly longer and heavier (390g to 420g), it more-or-less takes up the same space.
What you do get is a bigger and more vibrant screen thanks to the new OLED panel. The screen has grown from 6.62” to 7.” The resolution remains the same, however, at 1280 × 720 pixels. Despite this, games look so much better thanks to the fantastic contrast and brightness of the OLED panel. It really does make a difference.
The other notable improvement is an increase in the internal storage, doubling from 32GB to 64GB. So, you can store more games on the device. Outside of that, we found the speakers produce better sound and the stand at the back is much better, providing multiple angles that you can prop the console at. The Nintendo Switch (OLED) comes in a Neon or a Black & White colour scheme, too.
The shorthand of all this information is that newcomers buying a Switch for the first time should get the OLED model. It plays the same games, but better. However, if you already own a Switch, it’s probably not worth upgrading unless you play in handheld mode all the time. That’s because there’s no big jump in power, and when you play on a TV, you’re not looking at the screen on the console anyway.
