Game: Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Developer: TT Games
Formats: (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC)
Out: Now
We have been looking forward to this game so much. We’ve always loved the Lego games, which mix our most beloved movies with classic Lego humour that reinvent the stories with plenty more laughs. But it’s the gameplay which is the best. Co-op focused, the Lego games not only offer a tonne of combat, puzzles and collectables, but characters, abilities and builds that speak to the franchises on which they’re based.
They really are the best way to remember the famous films.
For this latest game in the series, developer TT Games has gone all out. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is humungous. It takes you through all nine main films in the Star Wars series. The prequel trilogy, the original trilogy and the most recent sequel trilogy. That’s nine movies, and with five story missions in each, a whopping 45 adventures to enjoy. And you can play the trilogies in any order, too.
Those with long memories will know we did get a Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens game in 2016, but the two films after that – The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker – have never been in a Lego game before. While the levels from the movies that have already had a Lego game have been redone.
As well as just having a lot of content, the individual levels are massive. There are multiple paths you can take to complete key objectives, then a stack of hidden collectables to find, fun minigames and sidequests. Not to mention you’ll be controlling vehicles like pod racers and the Millennium Falcon in different sections, too.
In fact, when you travel across the galaxy, you do it for real! You jump into your ship, launch into space and fly to your destination before coming into land. You may even come across random battles and encounters in space to deal with. Indeed, while we’re used to ground-based combat in Lego games, The Skywalker Saga has stacks of proper space-set dogfights to enjoy as well.
We love that you can just explore the different regions, too, without being locked into the story. Especially as there is a huge range of planets to go to, as well as famous locations like the Star Destroyer ships and the Death Star. Freeplay mode is the best in co-op, too.
Combat has been really ramped up for this Lego game, too. It’s not just about simple attacks now, but there are proper combos to unleash that not only focus on melee attacks, but Force powers as well. There are even stealth sections.
Regular fans of the series will also notice a huge upgrade to the visuals. They look incredibly sharp and detailed, with stacks of action going on at any one moment. If you’re using a character with a blaster, you can also go into a third-person mode, with the ability to use cover as the camera switches to an over-the-shoulder view while you’re firing. It’s very immersive.
We haven’t even started to get into the unlockables, the hilarious Mumble Mode (which changes voices to mumbles) and the promise of more DLC characters in the future. There is so much game here and it’s so much fun, you just need to get it. Use the Force on your mum and dad now!
Did You Know
There are over 300 characters in this game you can control! They have different classes that can be upgraded, as well as unique abilities that tie into the combat and puzzles. As you play through the story, you’ll be locked into certain characters, but in Freeplay mode you to use anyone you want in any level.
